With Parental Controls, you decide what you want your kids to watch and block programs you don’t want them to see. By setting up a Personal Identification Number (PIN), you are able to block viewing by specific channel, show rating, or shows during specific times of day.

Parental Locks and Purchase PINs
Parental Locks allow you to restrict viewing and purchases of TV programming based on your viewing preferences. Set a personalized 4-digit PIN and you can place Locks on selected ratings, channels and titles. You can also hide adult titles from being displayed on-screen.
PINs setup
Your Parental Locks PIN allows you to restrict viewing of programs. Your Purchase PIN is used to restrict pay programming purchases.
- Select Setup from the Main Menu.
- Select PIN Setup.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to set up, clear or change your PINs.
Parental Locks Setup
Set Locks anytime in the guide or while watching television. Use the LOCK icon on an information screen. Enter your 4-digit Parental Locks PIN and lock the channel, title or rating using the on-screen prompts. You can also set locks from the Setup Menu. From the Main Menu select Setup, then Locks Setup. Use the Directional buttons to make your selections and then press the OK/Select button to confirm each setting.
Parental Locks for On Demand
All On Demand access points can be locked using Service Locks Setup from the Setup Menu.
View Locked Programs, Bypass or Clear Locks
To view programs and channels you have locked, tune to the program or select it from the listings. Enter your PIN when prompted. To bypass or clear locks, temporarily open or clear all locks for easier viewing. Select Master Locks from the Locks Setup screen and change the options from No to Yes.
Restore Locks
Locks may be restored in any of the following ways:
- Press the LOCK button anytime and enter your 4-digit PIN.
- Select Locks Setup from the Setup Menu, then select YES to turn locks back on.
- Turn the set-top box off and back on.

Turning On and Off Parental Control
- Using the remote, press MENU to access Quick Settings
- Press UP/DOWN to select Turn ON Parental Control or Turn OFF Parental Control, respectively
- Press SELECT to change the Parental Control setting
- When prompted, enter your 4-Digit PIN
- TIP: For DVRs, turning off the DVR and turning it back on by pressing the Power button on the DVR (or by pressing POWER on the remote) is an easy way to turn on Parental Control for all the programming you have chosen to block
Creating or Changing a PIN
- Using the remote, press MENU twice to access General Settings
- Press UP/DOWN to select Block: PIN
- What is the current setting for Block: PIN?
- If Enabled and you don't know the PIN, contact Charter (at 1 888-438-2427) to determine the default PIN, and then go to step 4.
- If Disabled, press SELECT, press the Yellow A button and then go to step 7 (see image of remote above)
IMPORTANT! The PIN must be Enabled for the Parental Control to work.
- After receiving the default PIN, press SELECT
- Press UP/DOWN to select Change and then press the Yellow A button
- When prompted, enter the 4-digit PIN given to you by Charter Communications
- When prompted, enter a new 4-digit PIN
- Enter your new 4-digit PIN again for confirmation
Press
MENU to exit General Setttings should be Press Menu to exit General Settings
Blocking Channels, Ratings and Program Times
- Using the remote, press MENU twice to access General Settings
- When prompted, enter PIN and then re-enter it to ensure accuracy
- Press UP/DOWN and select one of the following options
- Block: Channels - to block all programs on a specific channel
- Block: Rating - to block all programs according to program ratings
- Block: Time New - to block all programs broadcast during a specific time
- Press SELECT and enter your 4-digit PIN when prompted
- Follow the on-screen instructions to block channels, ratings, or time slots
- Note: On DVRs, it will record the blocked programs, but the DVR will block the playback of the recording unless you enter a valid PIN
- Press MENU to exit General Settings
Hiding or Viewing Blocked Program Titles
You can prevent the digital receiver from displaying the titles of blocked programs on the program guide; and on DVRs, in the DVR Recorded and Scheduled lists.
- Using the remote, press MENU twice to access the General Settings
- Press UP/DOWN to select Block: Titles.
- Press SELECT to set the Block: Titles setting to either Hidden or Displayed
- Press A to accept your changes
- Press MENU to exit General Settings
Unblocking the Current Channel
- Using the remote, press MENU to access Quick Settings
- Press UP/DOWN to select Unblock this Channel
- Press SELECT to change the Parental Control setting
- When prompted, enter your 4-digit PIN
Blocking Recordings with Parental Control
You can keep others from watching a recording by using the Block feature. This feature is useful if children also use the DVR and you do not want them to watch certain recordings.
Note: For DVRs, to block a program that is scheduled to be recorded, block the program rating from the General Settings menu. The DVR records the program, but the recording can be watched only after entering your 4-digit Parental Blocking PIN
- Press MY DVR to access the Recorded List
- Press UP/DOWN to select the recording you want to block
- Press SELECT to access teh Recorded Program Options screen
- Press DOWN to select the "Block [title of program]" option
- Press SELECT. The PIN Entry screen appears
- Enter your 4-digit PIN. The PIN Entry screen disappears and the Lock icon appears next to the Info icon in the Information area of the Recorded List screen. The Lock icon indicates that the program is blocked.
To Watch Blocked Recordings on your DVR
Use either of the two methods described here to watch a blocked program
- Press MY DVR to access the Recorded List
- Chose one of the following options
- Press UP/DOWN to select the "Play [title of program]" option and then press SELECT. Enter your 4-digit PIN
- Note: Entering your PIN in this screen allows viewing of all programs and recordings
- Press UP/DOWN to select the "Unblock [title of program]" options and then press SELECT. Enter your 4-digit PIN
- Note: Entering your PIN in this screen turns off blocking only for this recording
MOXI Parental Controls
Moxi offers a variety of ways to customize Parental Controls.
The MOXI Remote
To configure parental controls:
- Navigate to the Settings category on the Moxi Menu .
- Select the Parental Controls option and press OK .
Setting and Managing the PIN
The first time you use Parental Controls, MOXI will prompt you to create a Personal Identification Number (PIN). You will use this one PIN for all Parental Control functions. Use the number buttons on your remote to enter a 4-digit number. Then enter it again for confirmations.
To change your PIN at any time:
- Navigate to the Settings category on the Moxi Menu .
- Select the Parental Controls option and press OK .
- Press the Left or Right buttons to scroll to Change PIN and press OK .
- Enter in current PIN using the number keys on your remote.
- Enter new PIN using the number keys on your remote.
- Enter in new PIN a second time to confirm and save your PIN.
- Press the Left or Right buttons to scroll to BACK and press OK .
NOTE: If you forget your PIN, you will need to call your local Charter Customer Care office number at 1- 888-438-2427 to reset your PIN.
Configuring Parental Controls
You can use Parental Controls to restrict access to content and subscription services. Once you have Parental Controls configured the way you want, you can turn them on and off as needed. Your settings are remembered so you will not lose them while Parental Controls are turned off. Whenever you edit Parental Controls, the controls are automatically turned on.
To turn the parental controls on or off at any time:
- Navigate to the Settings category on the Moxi Menu .
- Select the Parental Controls option and press OK .
- Choose the first option (Always Off or Currently On) and press OK .
- Enter your PIN using number keys.
- Choose On or Off and press OK .
Locking Charter On Demand and Pay-Per-View (PPV)
Using the On Demand/Pay-Per-View category under Parental Controls you can specify whether a PIN must be entered before ordering On Demand or Pay-Per-View shows.
Note: If you want to require a PIN before ordering a Charter On Demand or Pay-Per-View show, you must specify that otherwise, Moxi does not ask for one.
Locking Content by Rating
The TV Ratings and Movie Ratings categories allow you to selectively lock content based on TV and movie ratings set by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board. A lock icon appears next to the ratings that are locked.
When you lock a particular rating under either TV Ratings or Movie Ratings, MOXI automatically locks that level, plus all levels above it. For example, if you lock R-rated movies under TV Ratings, Moxi also locks NC-17-rated and NR-rated movies. Under TV Ratings, if you lock TV-PG, then Moxi also locks TV-14 and TV-MA.
Note: Locking movie content does not lock TV content with similar ratings. For example, locking Movie Ratings of PG will not lock TV Ratings of TV-PG. Also note that some movies shown on normal TV networks receive TV ratings instead of movie ratings.
Movie Ratings
To lock or unlock movie-rated content (PG, R, etc.):
- Navigate to the Parental Controls menu.
- Press the Left or Right buttons to scroll to Movie Ratings.
- Choose the desired rating and press OK (a Lock icon will appear when that rating is locked).
To clear all locks:
- Navigate to the Parental Controls menu.
- Press the Left or Right buttons to scroll to Movie Ratings.
- Choose Select or Unlock All Movies and press OK
- Choose your desired option and press OK
TV Ratings
To lock or unlock movie-rated content (TV-PG, TV-R, etc.):
- Navigate to the Parental Controls menu.
- Press the Left or Right buttons to scroll to TV Ratings.
- Choose the desired rating and press OK (a Lock icon will appear when that rating is locked).
To clear all locks:
- Navigate to the Parental Controls menu.
- Press the Left or Right buttons to scroll to TV Ratings.
- Choose Select or Unlock All TV Ratings and press OK
- Choose your desired option and press OK
Locking Content by Control
You can use Parental Controls to lock specific channels. When you lock a channel, a Lock icon appears next to it in the Lock by Channel menu, and in the Moxi® Menu Channels category.
To lock or unlock a channel:
- Go to Parental Controls.
- Choose Lock by Channel category.
- Find the desired channel in the vertical menu.
- Press OK .
To quickly clear all locks in the Lock by Channel category, select All Channels from the vertical menu and press OK .
Accessing Locked Content - Viewing Channels and Rated Content
When a show or channel is locked, a lock icon appears next to that show or channel in the Moxi Menu.
To access a locked show or channel:
- Select the channel you wish to access.
- Press OK
- Enter your PIN.
When using your remote to tune to a blocked channel directly, you will see a black screen.
The flip bar will indicate that the channel is locked.
To access the channel:
- Press OK to access the menu.
- Enter your PIN.
Accessing Locked Content via Direct Tuning or Menu
When accessing locked content via direct tuning or the Menu, parental control settings are maintained and will re-engage after 4 hours. Once you enter your PIN to access locked content via this method, all parental control settings will unlock for 4 hours. After 4 hours, all configured locks are reactivated.
If you wish to re-lock the system sooner:
- Go to Parental Controls.
- Press OK .
- Select Lock Now.
Accessing Locked Content via Settings
If you unlock Parental Controls for a show or channel in Settings, you will completely disable the lock function for that show or channel. Parental Controls will still be in place for all other shows and channels you have locked.
