DigiDo Overview

Charter has released NEW wireless Home Networking software called DigiDo.

The software is from the same creator as our InstaLAN product, Affinegy. The DigiDo software will begin to be installed with new Wireless Home Networking systems.

The release of the new DigiDo software does not replace the InstaLAN software; users who have systems that use InstaLAN will not need to obtain the DigiDo software.

To download the DigiDo software when installation disks are unavailable, click here.

What is DigiDo?

DigiDo is PC client software designed for professional installation – a simple and standardized process that improves accuracy and streamlines installations.
DigiDo also is a client software application designed to allow a user to self-install, configure and maintain a home network.

Features and Benefits:

A unified installation process installs all drivers, configures the gateway, and creates wireless profiles on the system. The installation CD supports all gateway models used by Charter. The updated interface is now compatible with Vista 64 and Windows 7.

  • Saves time and effort
  • Gateways can be setup wirelessly, no need to spend time pulling wires
  • Insures consistent setup for trouble free operation

Requirements

  1. The user must be a subscriber to the Charter Wireless Home Networking service.
  2. The user must be using a computer that is connected to Charter Internet service.
  3. This is a PC-only download; a Macintosh version is not available.

DigiDo Software Installation

Insert the provided disk into the PCs disk drive. The CD should automatically begin the Setup of DigiDo software.

Click Next to begin.

License Agreement

The user will need to accept the displayed License Agreement to continue.

Click Next.

Ready to Install

The Ready to Install screen will appear.

Click Install.

Installing

The DigiDo Setup will continue by installing the necessary components.

The program will begin the Installation Setup after all components have been extracted and installed.

DigiDo Easy Setup Wizard

With the software installed, the software wizard screen asks you to choose what you want to do:

Setup

Click the Setup button to proceed with a new home network installation.

Later, if you need to add other computers to this home network you will install this same CD on the other computers and use the Add button.

Setup Help

Help is available on all Setup screens by clicking on the ?  symbol in the upper right corner.

Select Gateway

The user will select the Gateway installed at their home by matching the device to its picture.

Only the brand will need to be selected. The DigiDo software will determine any other details about the exact model automatically.

NOTE: Users familiar with connecting the gateway can check the “I’m an Advanced User” to skip setup steps. Insure all connections are complete before clicking next

Connect Power and Cable

The user will be shown 6 screens to assist with physically connecting the Gateway device to the cable and power outlets.

The user should follow the steps, clicking the Next button after each step is complete.

The user should follow the steps, clicking the Next button after each step is complete.

Wireless Connections

Most laptop or notebook PCs will not need this adapter installed, since they usually have built-in wireless adapters. If so, DigiDo will detect this and show the message in green “Your adapter is successfully connected.”

The DigiDo CD includes the drivers required for the adapter and when the wireless adapter is inserted, they are installed automatically. No other CD or other software is needed to install the wireless adapter provided in your installation kit.

When an adapter is found, click Next.

Wired Connections

If no wireless adapter is found, you will be prompted to connect the computer to the router using an Ethernet cable (wired connection). DigiDo will recognize that a wired connection has been set up and proceed accordingly.

NOTE: If installing with a wireless adapter is preferred, connect the USB wireless adapter provided with your installation kit as shown above. DigiDo will recognize the wireless adapter and proceed accordingly.

When you connect an Ethernet cable between the gateway and the computer, DigiDo will use the wired interface instead of an existing wireless interface.

A nice benefit of the DigiDo software is that even if you do this installation with a wired connection, you can later switch to wireless. The settings will already be setup on that PC for the wireless network name and password (after you have completed the remaining setup steps).

Click Next once the screen shows a wired adapter has been found.

Name Wireless Network

Fill in the fields displayed on this screen.

Naming the wireless network sets the wireless name to a personal value unique to the subscriber.

The password is used to secure the wireless link to the gateway, keeping it safe from unwanted or unauthorized usage by neighbors.

When these fields are complete, click Next.

Enter Wireless Gateway MAC Address

When you perform setup over a wireless interface, you must enter the gateway’s MAC address on this screen.

This address is found on the bottom label and is identified by the words “Cable RF MAC address”. Click Next to continue. At this step, the actual settings changes will be sent to the gateway as described on the next page.

Note: This step is not needed on any Netgear gateway nor when doing setup using an Ethernet cable. The wizard will not show this screen in this case.

After entering the MAC address and clicking Next as described on the prior page, the DigiDo software sends the new wireless settings to the Gateway.

Status messages showing the progress are show in the bottom status area of the screen.

The gateway is being set with the new Network Name (SSID) and the new security settings (WPA) and the new password for the wireless security.

At the same time, a matching wireless profile is being created for connecting automatically to the gateway using these settings.

When the settings are completed, the success screen is displayed. (As seen on next page)

You can eject the CD at this step, and it can be used to install DigiDo on other computers to add them to the network.

Success

Connection Status

This screen is the Connection Status screen for the on-going home network connection manager.

It shows if there are any connection issues, and confirms the name and other details of the wireless network.

At this step, the Charter Installer should complete any required high-speed activation steps using the web browser to connect to the Charter activation server, following Charter standard procedures. This can now be done directly from this computer through the gateway either wirelessly or with a wired connection.

The setup of the gateway and the first computer is now complete. The installer can now add any other computers needed to the home network using this same CD.

Adding a second PC

Connect Another Computer

Additional computers can be setup to use the DigiDo software and connect to the Charter Home Networking Gateway.

Use the same home network installation CD and install the software on the PC that you are adding to the network.

The gateway should have already been configured using the DigiDo home networking CD.

After you install the software, you will see the screen shown. This time click the “Add”.

Check Wireless Hardware

For a wireless computer connection, simply use the USB adapter provided. This will be needed for most desktop computers if they do not already have a suitable wireless adapter.

For most notebook computers, the built-in wireless adapter will be used (if available). Be sure to check that any wireless switch is enabled on notebook computers.

As with the first computer, drivers needed for the wireless adapters are included on the CD provided by Charter; they will be automatically installed.

Alternatively, if this computer is near to the gateway you can also add the computer with an Ethernet cable. As before, this connection is automatically detected by the software.

When the adapter is ready, click Next to continue.

Connect to Your Wireless Network

From the list of available networks, click on the name of the network to which you want this computer connected.

If it is not in the list, you can try typing its name into the “Type its name here:” box.

Type the password created when setting up the gateway.

When ready, click Next and the software will make the connection to the network. Status messages will be shown in the bottom status area.

Success

When complete the success screen will be shown.

If there is a problem, you will receive a red error message. You can correct the error and retry the connection without leaving this screen.

Click Next to complete.

Solving Connection Problems

If there is a connection problem, the DigiDo home networking software will try to fix the issue. If it cannot fix it automatically, the tray icon will show a red “x” and a pane in the upper right corner of the screen will be red.

The red “exclamation” icon displayed between the computer and the router or the router and the internet icons will indicate where the error is occurring.

To find out more information and to fix the problem, click on the red exclamation icon. This will open the Click to Fix window.

Click To Fix

The Click to Fix dialog will open when you click the red exclamation icon.

Follow the directions shown for the problem that is detected. Most errors will be clearly identified for how to resolve the problem.

You can click the blue “?” for more help.

Device Reset

If your gateway is accidently reset to its factory default settings, this situation is automatically detected by the DigiDo software.

Click the red exclamation icon - you will be asked if you want to fix this problem.

If you click OK, DigiDo will automatically re-program the correct settings into the gateway.

This computer and the other computers in your home network should automatically re-connect with the problem solved.

Smart Menu

DigiDo home networking software is designed to inform you about your wireless connection. By supplying relevant details in an easy to ready fashion the Smart Menu helps Charter provide you with support when you are at home.

The Smart Menu indicates:

  • If you're connected to their Home network
  • The name (SSID) of the current network
  • Wireless Signal Strength
  • Whether the network is secure or not

Connect To Other Networks

If you wish to connect to a network when away from home

  • Click List Wi-Fi Network from the Smart Menu
  • Select the desired network from the list
  • Enter the proper password if a secure network

NOTE: Use of the Smart Menu is not required as DigiDo is designed not to interfere with common connections managers.

Program Options

When installed, DigiDo will always auto-run when you reboot their computer. This insures that you will connect to your home network automatically when at home.

If you do not want DigiDo to always autorun, there is an option not to automatically run DigiDo.

This can be found in the DigiDo Options dialog, which is displayed when you select Options from the DigiDo System Tray icon menu. You can also select the to not to be warned when you want to exit DigiDo.

DigiDo is always available to help you connect at home again by either:

  • Double clicking the DigiDo program icon on your desktop
  • Selecting DigiDo from the Charter folder in the Windows start menu.

Exit DigiDo Program

DigiDo home networking software is designed to help keep you reliably connected to your home network, as well as to help Charter provide support when you are at home.

DigiDo can be left running when not at home, as DigiDo is designed not to interfere with common connections managers.

To exit DigiDo, right click on the DigiDo icon in the Windows system tray.

This will open the menu shown below:

To restart DigiDo, simply double click the DigiDo program icon on your desktop.

Note: When DigiDo is open, the X in the upper right corner does not exit DigiDo - it hides the program.
